A prototype tablet computer was revealed on Thursday that looks like the fashionable iPad from Apple.
Kapil Sibal, the country's Minister for Human Resource Development, showed off the super-cheap touch-screen device in New Delhi as part of a push to provide high-quality education to students across the country. The tablet also comes with a solar-power option that could make it more feasible for rural areas.
Tech Spec...
The tablet is a Linux based device that has everything you would expect to see on a mobile device. It has 2GB of RAM (but no hard disk, instead using a memory card) and USB ports.
The Big Picture...
The tablet is part of a larger initiative that is designed to help India’s educational system. Nearly 8,500 colleges now have broadband connectivity with 500 or so web-based video courses.
The tablet has been developed alongside several branches of the Indian Institute of Technology and whilst the price is expected to be $35 now they hope it will be more like $10 once development has finished.
