OK, ok so we are a little nerdy… I’ve been called it before and I’ll no doubt be called it again!
I am referring to the recent confirmation of China’s Tianhe-1A system as being the biggest lad in the playground when it comes to processing power (2.57 trillion calculations per second).
Because I am a nerd (as we have already established) I have worked out the number of calculations per second by county; I’m sad but not geeky sad so have limited it to China, USA and UK (to put it in perspective).
These boys and girls measure by the thousand trillion… that’s per thousand trillion calculations per second (1,000,000,000,000,000).
No. 1 (Gold Star) – United States, 274 Supercomputers & 22.24 petaflop/s
No. 2 (Silver Medal) China, 41 Supercomputers & 5.7 petaflop/s
No. 3 (Wooden Spoon) – United Kingdon, 25 Supercomputers & 1.5 petaflops/s
So with 2,570,000,000,000,000 calculations per second on one supercomputer China is top dog but with a combined 22,240,000,000,000,000 calculations per second the US beats China with it’s 5,700,000,000,000,000…
The funny thought is with all that computing power I bet they still can’t tell me if it will rain tomorrow, if my bus is running late or if Elvis is alive!
